Splint: A simple splint is all that is usually needed. It is called a figure of eight. It is a wrap that gpoes in front of each shoulder and crosses in the back and distracts the shoulders and the broken ends of the collar bone also.

Varies: Depending on how it looks on x ray, the doctor may recommend operative or non-operative therapy. Operative therapy is recommended in active people with fractures that are shortened because of one well done study which showed decreased shoulder strength with non-operative therapy. Most heal with non-operative therapy with few issues.

Usually nonoperative: Depends on character of fracture and location. Many fractures within midportion of clavicle can be treated with supportive care and allowed to heal on own. The exception being those that are severely fragmented, shortened, at the end of the clavicle, or where the overlying skin may be compromised. Additional injuries in the same arm may also warrant operative treatment of the clavicle.

Splint: Usually a figure 8 splint is good enough for most cases. Some that are dislocated or poorly aligned require surgery.
