how can one best alleviate the pain of a fractured rib and how long should pain last?

Ouch!: Rib fractures can be extremely painful.  We used to prescribe chest binders - a wrap that goes around your chest - to help support the area, but no longer do so because it's been found that they don't help healing or pain much.  You can get some pain relief by taking anti-inflammatory medications (like ibuprofen).  Be sure to not take more than recommended.  Ice applied to the area might help too.

i have 2 displaced rib fractures. i had some bleeding in my chest that they said will absorbe. last night one of the ribs popped and since then i have limited mobility on the right side. i also can lift my arm anymore and i feel sharp poking pains?

: If you do not experience shortness of breath you are probably safe. Take pain pill as needed and icing the area will help. The treatment is very limited with rib fracture.

3 to 4 weeks: It usually takes 3, 4 even 6 weeks in some cases.

7 years ago i suddenly got the most intense pain i've ever experienced in my left rib cage that lasted for 6-8 weeks. pain improved a bit but the soreness never went away over that one rib. can a rib fracture really cause this long lasting problems?

Yes: If there was a rib fracture, it takes time to heal. Take Vitamin D supplements and calcium. An imaging study to confirm that there is no mass and that the fracture is healing well is advised.

Possibly: It could be, but also could just be bruised. If you are having significant pain go in and get it checked out by your doctor.

Rib fx: Rib fractures can commonly caused some persistent discomfort as that sometimes they do not heal completely or he'll in what we call a nonunion or a pseudoarthrosis. They can move ever so slightly and can cause some discomfort this may diminish with time but there may be a small component of persistence over the long-term

Time : Time and pain meds. Other than that, operative rib fixation will decrease the time, but at the expense if operative risk, which is low. The procedure however is not frequently done, and you may have a tough time finding anyone who does it. Hope this helps!

They will stop hurt-: -ing as they heal. Because there is good blood supply &amp; they are supported by the adjacent ribs, after a week you should notice the pain noticeably decrease fairly rapidly.

Broken : Broken bones take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to heal. Broken ribs will usually heal by about 3 months after the injury. The biggest risk of rib fractures is that they are painful, and as a result, tend to make you breathe more shallowly. By failing to fully inflate your lungs as you normally would, you can be at risk for pneumonia. Depending on how healthy you are, pneumonia can be a very serious and even life threatening complication. Furthermore, if you have injured yourself and think you may have broken ribs, you should seek immediate medical attention. The amount of force necessary to break a rib can also bruise or lacerate the lung, or even injure other internal organs. While the rib fracture itself may not be serious, the other associated injuries can be very serious.
