No: Asthma can affect just about anyone.  If you are obese, your asthma may be more difficult to control, but obesity does not cause asthma.  Occassionally obese patients are misdiagnosed as having asthma when they do not, and the diagnosis should usually be confirmed with a special breathing test called a methacholine challenge test.

See below: If you are out of shape, i would think that  you would start having breathing problems within minutes but true asthma takes about 15-20 montes or longer to show itself after exercise starts.

This test can be very useful but is used in conjunction with other important information including a detailed past medical history and physical exam. Both subjective and objective measures are used to determine if you have asthma or any other respiratory disease.

Yes: You probably already know that many professional athletes are asthmatics and they do have attacks as well. Work out an exercise plan with your physician since you want to start slow. If your attack trigger includes exercise. All the more to start slow. Building up strength and tolerance is a definite plus.

Testing: A lot of different medical problems have similar symptoms to asthma.  The best way to confirm the diagnosis is with a methacholine challenge test - a special type of pulmonary function test.  Your breathing is tested while a therapist gives you an inhaled medication called methacholine.  In patients with asthma, this will cause the airways to spasm at low doses - a "positive" test.

Depends: If your history is suggestive your doctor could pursue some lung function testing that might confirm your suspicion. If s/he could not trigger some evidence of the disease with provocative testing, s/he might need you to return for an evaluation when/if you had some symptoms. With no suggestive history or findings on testing, it would not be evident on a physical alone.

An asthma attack happens when your airways become swollen and inflamed, leading to persistent coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and sometimes chest tightness and pain. If you suspect asthma, make sure you have a plan with your doctor for recognizing and treating attacks.

Check with allergist: Several options, so check with your allergist.  I am always suspicious for the presence of mold toxins when a patient presents with asthma.  Rule out mold toxins.
