For what reason?: With any elective surgical procedure, you need a clear reason for doing it. Circumcision, like any surgical procedure, must not be undertaken lightly. Indeed, the urologist is likely going to ask similar questions before agreeing to perform the procedure. In terms of sexual experience, i don't see it having much impact on that.

You can't: Your boyfriend is entitled to his own opinions, especially as regards his body. Circumcision is not necessary, but is still widely practiced.

If foreskin tight: Circumcision will take care of phimosis (tight foreskin). Adults may respond to applications os prescription strength steroid cream applied to tight skin twice daily for 2-3 months. However, circumcision is much more reliable and definitive.

Adult Circumcision: I am assuming you are speaking about male circumcision.

This is not common but there are some rare conditions such as scarred foreskin and other reasons for this procedure to be offered to adult men.

But, there is a large movement growing in places where HIV infections are high because those men who are circumcised do not contract HIV as easily as those men who are not circumcised.

Not with anesthesia: Not if patient is asleep & few hours after if local anesthetic injected into base of penis before he wakes. Painless during if done unedr local anesthesia (la), minor pinprick pain from la needle, less if Emla (lidocaine and prilocaine) cream applied 1/2 hour before. Coban bandaage post-op prevents swelling & minimizes pain. Pain killers post-op recommended. Some prescribe Ativan to reduce painful post-op erections.

Circumcision: The cost varies depending on whether you have insurance or not.  If you are a self pay patient you have to discuss and work out financial arrangements with the urologist

Maybe required or no: Men should always have phimosis (tight foreskin) corrected for acceptable penile hygiene. Foreskin needs to be loose to keep penis clean ; remove smegma. Can often be corrected by applications of prescription strength steroid cream. Failing that preputioplasty for some ; frenulotomy for others can take care of problem without need to remove foreskin. Otherwise circumcision required as an adult.

About 6 weeks: I tell my patients to avoid sexual activity for 6 weeks after circumcision.

Most are preventable: They are post-operative pain, bleeding, bruising or hematoma formation. Uneven removal of skin, too much or too little skin removed, rarely infection, allergic reaction to suture material ; meatal stenosis in infants.

Cicumcision: Call your doctor for a referral to a surgeon who does this operation.  Consult with this specialist surgeon be examined and receive an opinion on what you need surgically.  Ask all the questions you can think of at that visit so you are fully informed.
