Drug allergy: Penicillin and Amoxicillin allergy are common and the most common symptom is rash including hives.  The rash can start while taking the medication or even within days after stopping it.  Other reasons for hive like rashes are possible including infectious rash from strep or virus.  There is a skin test for penicillin allergy that an allergist can perform if necessary to sort it out.

can i apply aqueous calamine on my 1 year old baby when he gets urticaria or when he gets heat rash? need him to  stop scratching.

Not recommended: For itching from heat rash, the best thing to do is prevent it by keeping him cool and dry. Put him in light clothing and avoid overheating when possible (avoid car rides in the heat of the day ). For the urticaria, your doctor may be able to help figure out what is causing the hives. Calamine is not very helpful. For itching due to insect bites, i like caladryl clear best.

Immune system alert: For some reason (often it is mysterious even with best efforts to identify the agent) some people's immune systems go into an emergency alert mode and send out defensive weapons to protect you from what it feels as a threat. Unfortunately, it usually is an over-reaction and causes more problems for you. If your dr agrees - a daily benedryl may help. Be ready with an epi-pin & 911 for emergency!

Several types of inflammatory conditions of the skin, allergic reactions, and sometimes bacterial, viral or fungal infections can cause rashes on the skin. Insect bites can also be the cause of a rash on the skin.  Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.

Chronic urticaria: 'Keep' is the operative word here. Is the duration now 4-6 weeks? If so, you have chronic hives, and the issues change from finding a 'cause' (unusual for chronic hives) to treament. Various antihistamines, steroids (prednisone) have been used for decades. Exciting new treatment is once a month Xolair. It has been helpful in giving relief and avoiding long term steroids. Find an allergist nearby.

Hives: Hives (urticaria) is common and sometimes you may never find the cause. Causes can be food allergies, medications, problems w your liver, infections inside the body (hepatitis, hiv, ect), or no reason is found. Best to get blood work to try to find these possible causes and treat accordingly. If nothing is found, a simple nightly dose of Atarax (hydroxyzine) (sedating) 25mg would help.

36 year old male. taking (legal) prohormones including 1-andro and 4-andro. some but not all cause severe rashes/hives. some products which i took last year without issue now cause hives. what's the cause and how do i resume use of these products?

Accepted Answer

: Supplement is not FDA approved so its manufacture could be contaminated then you are allergic with one of the ingredients, likely not the prohormones. You should stop all the products which cause hives or rashes. The safest approach is to see your doctor if you think you need hormone replacement therapy. Good luck.

Hard to tell: Proper assessment will require some history, an exam & possibly lab work. This could be as simple as a transient virus or a more worrisome auto-immune disorder. I would have this evaluated by the child's physician when you can arrange it. If the kid is taking fluids well & playful at least part of the time it can wait until office hours. If the kid is not, start with an urgent care center.
