what are some over-the-counter medication for hives?

Antihistamines: Both non-sedating (Zyrtec, Allegra, (fexofenadine) Claritin) and sedating (Benadryl) over the counter antihistamines are useful for hives. Usually recommend daily treatment with non-sedating antihistamines for more chronic, persistent hives. For acute hives sedating antihistamines are fine.

i was on a combo of atovaquone, azrithmysin,doxicycline and nystatin for lyme and babesia.day 40 developed traveling hives/rash . stopped all medication. but now 4 days in there is no improvement. been taking benadryl which only helps about an hour?

Need to see doc: Based on stated information it does not sound that your rash was due to side effects from the antibiotic/ antifungal combo you have been taking. A variety of conditions, including renal and/or hepatic, related or unrelated to your treated infections may have developed and your best reference at this point is your treating doc who will have a clear history and documentation of your ailments.

Contact Dermatitis: You can have  a hives reaction due to a wide range of things. Any new detergent? New shirt? Lotion? Soap?

Make note of any recent changes, and slowly start removing and adding things back until the symptoms go away.

Don't take it!: The probability is that you are allergic to that medication and should avoid it. Depending on the particular medication subsequent reactions could be more severe, even life threatening. If the hives persist other possible causes of urticaria (hives) should be considered.

Maybe: Hives are an allergic reaction. What have you eaten differently? Using any new soaps or detergents in your wash?
Try to figure out what is causing the hives. If its avoidable then the hives won't start due to  avoiding the allergy trigger.

Depends on half life: Different medications have different half lives.  A half life is the time is takes for 1/2 of the drug to be metabolized and passed out of the body.  It usually takes 3 half lives for a drug to be considered out of the body.  If you know the half life of the drug, then you can make an educated guess about how long the hives will last.  It also depends on your body's own metabolic rate (fast/slow).

See an allergist: If  you don't have drowsiness, you may try taking Hydroxyzine 2 to 3 times a day.  However you may need to consult an allergist if the itching continues for more than 8 weeks or getting worse.

: The rash may not be related to the medication, and it is best to have a consultation either with Healthtap or your PCP. Hives tend to be blotchy, red and may disappear and reappear. Discuss whether there are treatment alternatives. Watch for signs of itching, spread of the hives and shortness of breath/difficulty breathing. Discuss whether an antihistamine should be used.
