if one has initial stages of oa in the hip or knee, is it inevitable that  hip or knee replacement surgery will happen?

how can i avoid it?

Not inevitable : Hip and knee OA are very frequent and is OA in the weight bearing joints, thus weight loss and exercise to strengthen the muscles surrounding this joints is key. The x-ray can showed bone on bone OA but what matters is if you are having pain. If pain and had tried  lose weight and PT, then try medications first, even injeccions. If nothing works then consider surgery if your lifestyle is affected.

Both have become : Very common and routine procedures.  These have the best outcomes done by surgeons who do a lot of them.  However, a lot also depends on  the status of the patient with obesity, malnutrion, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, osteoporosis, presence of autoimmune diseas such as lupus, clotting disorders, prior blood clots or dvt, varicose veins and deformities in legs all having an impact.

after having hip replacement is it feasible to have knee replacement and what are duration procedure involved?

Accepted Answer

Yes: It is not uncommon to need replacements in more than one joint. I joke with my patients : " does that knee have as many miles as that hip had?". Both legs too. Most insurances like 3 months between replacement surgeries.

With today's replacement parts, i tell my patients they can expect 15-20 year lifespan, if properly cared for.

whatever i've gotten even small cut, it takes a little bit for bleeding to stop. if i have hip & knee replacement, i am nervous as how is bleeding going stop when they cut inside my body?

Accepted Answer

: You should discuss this with the surgeon doing the procedure. There are tests that can be done to determine if your bleeding stops normally. This may be a good idea to do before the procedure to make sure your blood is able to clot normally. The surgeon can also explain to you what is done to control bleeding during these procedures. Don't believe so: The best thing you can do is keep up your exercise. It is imperative to keep your muscles in top shape.  This may delay the inevitable joint replacement.

please help! what is the physical therapy protocole for total hip and total knee replacement?

Accepted Answer

Too long to asnwer: Here, but there are some important goals, including safety, strengthening and walking. Hip rehab will include this plus reviewing universal hip precautions, depending on the approach of the hip replacement. Knee replacement will do the same (without hip precautions of course), but will also work to make sure you get full extension of your knee as a knee flexion contracture can be problematic.

i had a total knee replacement on the right side 6 months ago and now my right hip is very sore . i had it xrayed with no result .

Hip pain: Some disorders of the hip like tendonitis or chronic  sprain won't show up on simple xrays. It's possible that simply walking improperly has strained muscles around the hip. Also arthritis or cartilage derangement may be present and not detectable by convention xray studies. Your orthopedic surgeon may order more imaging,steroid injections,physical therapy,etc after another examination.

10 weeks ago i had a left total knee replacement and now i have a dull, achy pain in my left hip and left foot ankle. what could this be?

Accepted Answer

Be seen: Many potential causes, but i would certainly let your surgeon know.  It could be as simple as the altered gait you have had in your recovery could have aggravated your hip and ankle.  But it could also be early signs of a blood clot or infection.  Again, let you surgeon know and he can take a look.  Thank you.

would a knee replacement get rid of the pain in my knee permanently like my hip replacements did?  im tired of constant pain and considering doing it.

Accepted Answer

Good chance: No one can promise you anything......but, many of my patients ad well as myself get significant improvement in pain
