Treat the person: Many people with a uric acid of this level and normal kidney function testing have no problems, including no gout. If it not troubling you, consider leaving it alone. Life's too complicated as it is to alter your diet to "treat a number." if your physician has not urged any course of action for you, then consider doing nothing.

Depends: Do you have gout? Does it run in your family? If both answers no, then not a lot to worry about unless crazy-high value (that's a medical term). If yes to either or both questions, then should talk to your dr, as can predispose to gout flares / make them worse.

Several: Some have a deficiency that makes them unable to eliminate enough uric acid.  Others produce too much.  Chemotherapy causing the bursting of blood cells can cause high uric acid.  Uric acid when too high can cause kidney stones and gout attacks.  It is unhealthy for the blood vessels.  A diet low in purines (search web for "gout diet" or "low purine diet") can help.  Meds sometimes are needed.

May not be gout: Need an evaluation.  If an effusion (fluid in the joint space) is present tap it and look to see if gout drystals present.  More likely you have typical knee pain.  Perform quad sets for help.  In bed tighten the quads and hold for 10 seconds, then relax for 10 seconds.  Do this 20 times in am and pm.  If typical knee pain it should get better in 2 weeks.  Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin are good pain reliever.

Uric acid symptoms: Many patients have no symptoms of high uric acid (ua) levels. Once they have a gouty attack, symptoms are readily perceived.  People who drink excessively can make their blood more acidotic which can precipitate gouty attacks. It is best to lower your ua as it is increasing be found to be a cardiovascular risk factor. See a physician to see if there are drugs that can lower your serum ua level.

Can be controlled : A high uric acid (HUA) level in the majority of people is due to genetic factors; in a smaller % of people it is due to kidney or metabolic disorders.  Regardless of the cause for HUA it can be successfully treated but not "cured". There are several very effective meds  that can lower the HUA over a 3-9 month interval. Once uric acid &lt; 6.0 then HUA effects (gout/ kidney stones)  will not occur .

See details: Diets and exercise have little or no effect on serum uric acid levels. If your friend does not have gout or kidney stones then no therapy is usually needed. If there is a history of gout or stones then Allopurinol is indicated.
