my 5 year old has hgb 11.7,hct 34.3,mcv 70.9 ( low) mch 24.2,mchc 34.1,rdw 16.6 ( high),plt 340, # lymp 3.6 ( low),% lymp 53%,rbc 4.8.he is a normal active kid.can anyone explain the low mcv and high rdw,# lymp? he is a picky eater ,doesnt eat much?

Iron deficiency : The combination of low MCV, increased red cell RDW and platelet elevation point to a moderate iron Deficiency, can check iron stores with more blood tests, but a daily vitamin with iron or more green leafy veggies in the diet like spinach will help with this,

Microcytosis=MCV&lt;80: The good news is that you have normal Hgb and Hct so are not anemic at this time.  When mcv and mch are low, it suggests that to maintain a normal Hct and Hbg, your body has compensated by making more rbc (high rbc) that are slightly smaller (low mcv and mch).  Most common cause would be mild iron deficiency or thalassemia, but increased rbc can also be related to elevation.

: For determining if you have or not anemia, a hemoglobin (Hb) or a hematocrit (Hct) will be needed. Your platelet count is borderline low. Most common causes for anemia ( if you indeed have anemia) and/or low platelets are related to either the main disease or treatment received, with other causes still possible, less likely. Your oncologist remains your best reference at this point.

recent cbc: rbc 4.48, hgb 11.8, hct 38.1, mcv 85.0, mch 26.3, mchc 31.0, rdw 15.8, plt 503. how "abnormal" is my plt in relative terms? what is likely the cause of high plt (poss iron deficiency?)?

Increased platelets: Your platelet count of 503 is technically high, but not extremely high by any means. You are also mildly anemic. This anemia is most likely due to iron deficiency as this is the most common cause by far in young women. Further tests would confirm this if necessary. And yes, iron deficiency is ONE cause of a high platelet count. Continue to sort this out with your doctor.

Very mild anemia: It will depend on the normal range of hb used  at your laboratory where you have the test done.  At my lab- the normal range used is between 12-15, so hb of 11 is only mildly anemic. It is nothing to worry much about however. In young woman like yourself- with your monthly period, you lose some iron in every cycle. This can cause mild anemia. Check your iron and take multi vitamin. D/w your md.

Yes, but what you: Described is a complicated situation that would require in person evaluation for a proper diagnosis and treatment. All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that.

my rdw is 14.5 and my plt is 419 should i be concerned?
