Ask : Ask to be tested for mononucleosis. This is a common cause of elevated liver enzymes, even after the symptoms of mono have resolved. Otherwise follow up with a liver specialist for further investigation/work up.

ALT: ALT=alanine aminotransferase, previously known as SGPT is used as a marker of liver damage, but is present in low amounts in normal individuals. Sources other than liver also exist. Elevations above the normal range are found in some "innocent" cases depending on population studied, drugs that may be in use, etc. Occasionally, exercise can transiently increase levels, for example.

High ALT...: Elevated alt can be caused by hundreds of conditions. Acute HIV infection is one of them. Other viruses, medications, inflammation, and alcohol are much more common causes. If you are concerned about hiv, very good testing is available. In fact, you can now test yourself for HIV at home using a kit obtained from drug stores without a prescription.

Find the cause: Probably one of the following -- alcohol, some medication you're allergic to, hepatitis B or C, hemochromatosis, Wilson's, autoimmune hepatitis, antitrypsin deficiency, being overweight / not exercising. All are manageable, and all are danger to your life. Don't 'treat a lab value'. Get to the cause. This would be a great time to get trim &amp; fit regardless.

Depends on cause: If you drink alcohol, stop completely and entirely. Other causes of elevated liver enzymes are hepatitis, drug reactions, heart failure and auto-immune disorders. Please consult your doctor.

Not common.: This does not appear to have any consistent association with high alt/ast.  Mainly this deals with low TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and high t4/t3 thyroid hormones.  This condition does have an effect on the cells in your body, and causes weight loss and diarrhea, so the liver might be working harder than normal and so some enzymes like alt/ast might be high.  See your dr. To be sure.

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it would help to have the actual values of the results. The one item of interest is high ALT. If you drink alcohol, stop entirely for three months and redo the test. Other results are okay.

There : There are many causes for abnormally high liver enzymes and some of them are more serious than others. It would be a mistake for anyone to tell you whether in this case the problem is a serious one or not, since we don't know the history or the time course.

A hepatologist would be the best person to sort this out.  However, hepatology is a subspecialty within gastroenterology, and if you can't find a hepatologist, a gastroenterologist would be fine as an initial point of contact.
