Very rarely.: A hiatal hernia is an enlargement of the normal opening in the diaphragm thru which the esophagus passes. Most people have no symptoms. For those that do, it usually causes heartburn due to the stomach yo-yo-ing up and down thru the hiatus. Rarely, the top of the stomach stays in the abdomen but the bottom flips up thru the hiatus, sometimes causing obstruction or bleeding, which can be serious.

All people have a hole in the diaphragm thru which the esophagus passes; this is called the hiatus of the diaphragm.  This hole can become enlarged, allowing the esophagus and stomach to yo-yo up into the chest, causing reflux (gerd).

Sliding / type i hernia is the most common and may contributing to reflux events.  Type 2-4 may have dramatic presentations and acute surgical indication.

Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. May take decades: Many hiatal hernias are a symptomatic. Most commonly they become associated with symptoms of acid reflux disease. Indications for operation are related to acid reflux and loss of medical control of the disease. Asymptomatic hiatal hernias do not require any form of surgery or repair. If the acid reflux causes esophageal injury then surgical repair would be warranted.

: Hiatal hernias are just there and may not even get bigger. They are essentially a portion of the stomach that has moved to the upper side of the diaphragm when the stomach should always be on the lower side of the the diaphragm. Obesity can cause them to increase in size due to the stomach being pushed higher. So what is important is not to be overweight, eat small meals, and not to eat late.

can coughing with a hiatal hernia make it worse. im unwell so ive been coughing a lot and its hurting a lot more and causing me to feel sick?

: Severe cough can exacerbate hiatal hernia but your tummy pain is more likely from the strained muscles of abdominal wall rather than from more acid reflux. Pain from strained muscles gets worse during coughing or moving your belly.
