Yes and yes: Yes they are common, as many as 15 % people may have them and mostly they are not serious if they are simple sliding type. People who have GERD assisted with hiatal hernia or those with large hiatal hernias should be seen by surgeon to assess for need for hernia repair or antireflux surgery etc.
