does this sound like hernia symptoms?under my left rib cage at night it feels like something is sliding around and a lump is there also.

Could be: It could be a hernia. If the lump is there all the time then it may be something else. Hernia lumps tend to come out  or be more pronounced when there is increased abdominal pressure like when straining to have a bowel movement or when coughing. Have your doctor check it to make sure of the cause of the lump.

No, not likely: Unless you had previously had major trauma in the area causing fractures or if you had prior surgery in the area, otherwise hernias do not form in that area. A physical exam with a doctor would identify a hernia if present.

i choked on food two months ago. still pain in upper rib cage center under bra area. could i have a hernia from choking?

This could : be a sprain of the joint at the costochondral junction.These are small joints where the ribs connect to the sternum( breast bone). Since it’s been 2 months, I would consult your primary care doc for a diagnosis.

i have copd and cough all the time due to this i now have a rather large hernia on my left side over my rib cage. when i cough i feel like i am being stabbed and it is quite painful to the touch. help?

See a surgeon: If you truly have a hernia it sounds as if it may need surgical correction.   Do this quickly.  A viscus may become entrapped in the hernia and create a potentially life-threatening situation.  Hope you improve quickly.

PO pain hernia: It's possible if the mesh was fixated near this area. Since there is no information about type of hernia repair, it's difficult to say. I recommend returning to your surgeon who knows all the specifics about your surgery to answer this question.

LLQ pain: Many things can cause this, diverticulitis, polyps, constipation, rectal prolapse etc. Would see a colorectal surgeon or gastroenterologist, sounds like you need a CT and or colonoscopy. This would also rule out the difficult hernias as well as simple ones.

7 yr old son w/pain in right testicle and lower rib cage....doesn't complain during the day but cries in pain at night. can a hernia worsen at night?

Testicular pain: Hernia related pain can occur at any time. In your sons case iy seems to be postional, worsening when he lays down. However, all testicular pain must be checked out. I wouldn't waste any time. I recommend consulting with you doctor.

can i ride roller coasters with a hernia? it's by my rib cage and it's small but the doctor didn't specify what type. when i asked to get it removed they said it was too small, should i avoid going on any thrill rides?

: A small hernia anywhere should not keep you from coaster rides. But ask your your doctor about the kind of hernia you have.

See gastroenterology: You may need to have an upper endoscopy done to see if there is active gastritis, reflux esophagitis or peptic ulcer disease.  You may need to have testing for h. Pylori if not done, and to have your antacid regimen maximized, depending on the findings.  Also seeing a dietician may help in avoiding foods that worsen this discomfort.

i'm 4 months post mesh ventral hernia repair and now my abdomen gets hard  on my left side and causes pain in my left rib cage. is this normal?

Accepted Answer

Not clear : Where the hernia repair was on the abdomen vis a vis your pain.  I recommend calling your surgeon.  If you have severe pain, bowel obstruction, or fevers, you might want to go to the er.
