Removal, antibiotics: It sounds like you have an ingrown nail, and if it's infected, you'll likely need antibiotics, possibly a nail procedure. Just the painful border can be removed, or the entire nail if necessary (you're numbed up for this, don't worry!). While waiting to see your doctor, soak the toe 10 min/day in luke warm water and epsom salts, use a small amount of antibiotic ointment, and cover with a bandaid.

It does gel....: Psoriasis can affect the toenails. The thicker nails can cause them to grow curved and can then push down the sides of the nails. May need to get it tested; fungus vs. psoriasis. May need the nails ground down to see if that helps or checked for ingrowing nails. See a Podiatrist.

Broken toe.: Only if the pain is horrible after a week.  Just kidding.  A broken big toe could require a boot, usually not a cast. I assume xrays have been taken.  The great toe is a heavy wt-bearing part of the body and needs to be protected when fractured or broken.  If you haven't seen a doctor yet, you should.  If you were told that you could be in a walking boot, an ankle walking boot suffice.  Amazon.

Check shoes: Make sure athletic shoes are long enough & fit properly to prevent big toe from jamming against the end. Also make certain toenails are cut properly (not too short) or may develop ingrown toenail & possible infection (paronychia) which may require topical antibiotics or doc visit to resolve. Pain in joint may be gout or pseudogout, where crystals are deposited in the joint, cause pain & inflammatn.
