Many possibilities: Your pain may be due to: trauma (fracture, sprains, arthritis), infection (ingrown toenail), metabolic conditions (gout), structural (bunion, hammertoes), or biomechanical abnormality, or nerve damage (neuropathy). A thorough history and physical exam by a professional and possibly some laboratory and radiology exams may help to determine the right cause and appropriate treatment.

Joint pain: Joint pain can be caused by many things such as infections, fractures or trauma, arthritis, sprains/strains, or gout to name a few. I would recommend evaluation by a podiatrist.

Many things: There are a number of things that can cause pain in the big toe. This is a very nonspecific symptom. I recommend that someone with sharp pain in the feet should be seen by orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon for a definitive diagnosis. One in your area can be found at www.Aofas.Org.

Some things that can casue big toe pain include: an ingrown toenail, a bone spur, ill fitting shoes, compressed nerve, tendonitis of the EHL or FHL tendons, arthritis at the joint level, a hammer toe etc as you can see there are many possibilities. If you are able to specify where on the toe and what the pain feels like, when you get it etc we could help narrow. An x-ray may or may not be helpful. Any podiatrist should be able to help you with this problem.
