could a hemangioma of the spine be dangerous?

Accepted Answer

Depends where: If it is in the vertebral bodies, where we commonly find them, avoid becoming osteoporotic and they should cause in trouble at all. If you have a rare hemangioma that has developed somewhere else in the spine, it would depend if it impinges on any nerves or the central canal.  On the skin it does not pose any danger normally.

Hemangioma?: Might you mean "hematoma" (bruising, swelling) instead of hemangioma (an abnormal build-up of blood vessels in skin or internal organs -- most appear in childhood)? It's not unusual to have bruising after an auto accident, but if you also have ongoing pain it's a good idea to see your physician.  Depending on severity, the er or urgent care center if your own doctor isn't available.

i have 6 hemangiomas in my spine. the one at t9 is invasive covering over 99% of my disk. should i get anything done to it. i get mixed answers. ?

Not yet: Hemangiomas occur in 20% of the population and very few  require treatment.  Very large hemangiomas have the ability to collapse if they occupy a significant area of the vertebral body and there is associated trauma to that area.  See a spine specialist- orthopedic spine surgery or neurosurgeon for your treatment options and to decide if it's necessary.

Cause unknown often: There are some genetic syndrome that are associated with hemangiomas such as Osler Webber Rendu syndrome however most hemangiomas  occur sporadically and their cause is unkown.

Hemangioma: hemangioma refers to a mass of blood vessels that commonly occur on the subcutaneous tissues.Usually hemangiomas are benign and incidental finding on MRI, if the  signal intensity or the color of the hemangioma looks unusual on MRI then it's called Atypical Hemangioma and above scan is usually needed to make sure there is no malignancy, please talk to ur ordering doctor.

i had a neck mri that came back normal, but what does it mean that there is a hemangioma in c6?

Mgt/workup: Hemangiomas are fairly common masses in the neck and airway. I would advise uploading the image to your virtual EMR so that I can review it. 
If you are experiencing any difficulty swallowing or breathing, a procedure may be completed to remove or shrink the mass. A follow up scan can be used to gauge the rate of growth.

Hemangioma: A hemangioma is a benign growth of blood vessels,but if you're having neck discomfort,consult a neurosurgeon who will review the MRI with the radiologist to be sure that this is a hemangioma and whether it's symptomatic and what kind of followup is recommended.

how do radiologists tell the difference between hemangioma of the spine and metastasis of the spine? in 2015 i was told hemangioma. in 2020 i was told metastasis. they both look the same. is a biopsy the only way?

: I would ask the radiologist if it is possible to distinguish using an angiogram.  But tricky getting a good angiogram of this maybe.

i have at it for about a year now and it's not really a huge bruise just slightly darker than everywhere else and it goes from the start of my ribs almost to the start of my back? i looked up pictures of hemangioma and it doesn't look like anything i saw?

Not a bruise: Anything that has been around for a year is not a bruise it would be unusual for an hemamgioma to.appear and.grow that fast  see a dermatologist do tou have "bruising"'anywhere.else?

had mri spine. showed small t 2 hyperintense splenic lesion may represent cyst or hemangioma. is this concerning?

Not at all: As long as they are small there is no significant risks. Small splenic cysts are fairly frequent findings.  Hemangioma of the spleen less common than in the liver but as long as they are small cause no significant issues
