NEED FOR SUPPORT!: Most shoes aren't always what is bad, usually it's the crummy insoles they come with! there are many possibe reasons (plantar fascitis leaps to mind) that you may have pain in the heels, but try arch supports like spenco polysorb (http://www.Spenco.Com/products/footcare/poly-sorb) and otc anti-inflammatories (like aleve).  If these don't help, see a podiatrist.

Specific location?: Specific location matters a great deal. If the pain is at the bottom of the heel and hurts most with the initial steps of the morning, I would think plantar fasciitis. Heel spur would also be a consideration. Any lateral pain would make me think of a soft tissue injury (ligament or tendon). A physical exam and perhaps imaging may be in order.

Most conservative care consists of: icing, antiinflammatories, stretching, good shoes and support, limited weightbearing activity and cortisone injections.  Custom orthotics are helpful.  If conservative care is not successful then surgery may be necessary.  We like to try ecswt (shockwave therapy) before surgery.  Google it.  Dr l.
