would you recommend a pacemaker for a 60 year old male patient who has long heart pauses (up to 8-9 seconds) only at night or during naps, 30 times per week, but has no other symptoms whatsoever? would the pacemaker extend life expectancy?

Accepted Answer

: The risk of long pauses is heart stoppage or arrhythmia (abnormal beats).  I am hoping you have sought out a cardiologist who can discover the cause of this.  Pacemakers can be life saving and some actually have a mechanism to electroshock the heart to restore rhythm if the beats are too infrequent.  Please have this fellow see a cardiologist and soon.

during excitement, my heart will beat 3 to 4 times and then pause?

Accepted Answer

Premature Beat: You probably have intermittent premature  beats which can occur with stress or excitement.  After the premature beat there is often a short pause and then the heart rate returns to normal  this is probably not dangerous or serious but if you are concerned, see you doctor.

: It is called ectopic heart beats and it is not uncommon. Certain food or drink can precipitate ectopic beats such as strong coffee or tea.  If you are healthy then there is nothing to concern, just identify and avoid the triggers. However, if you have underlying medical problems such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, thyroid disorder, etc., you should be evaluated by your family doctor.

Normal: You're describing premature beats: the heart beats early but you can't feel that beat because it's only partly filled. Then it pauses a moment to resume its former rhythm. While it's waiting (only a few hundred milliseconds) it has more time to fill, so the next beat is extra forceful. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. Get plenty of rest and try to avoid stress. Palpitations come and go.

A skipped or : delayed beat is not uncommon.If it makes you sick like dizzy,short of breath,weak,lose consciousness,notify your MD

Discuss with HT Dr: Palpitations is the word patient use to describe a fluttering sensation in the chest caused by skipped heart beats or rapid heartbeats.  Patients with no heart disease can often experience palpitations. Sometimes they are brought on by anxiety, fatigue, caffeine and cough and cold medicines.

Extrasystoles: Your description suggests extrasystoles, that are common in normal individuals. Sometimes due to excess caffeine or stress, most of the time remain unexplained. Any associated symptoms, such as lightheadedness, chest pain, nausea among other should trigger workup. Hope it helps.

Skips, dizzy, faint: If its a short skip, you may notice the "return beat" afterwards. If it lats a few seconds, you may feel dizzy. If it's longer (how much longer depends upon the person) you may faint.

Heart Beat: Your heart can pause, skip, contract extra all very safely. It can be annoying and uncomfortable because it feels like a jump in your throat or chest. Unless it happens frequently and/or is accompanied by symptoms as lightheadedness they are genrally benign (i.E not  serious).

is it normal for my heart to stop when i'm active? when this happens my beat speeds and then the pause lasts about 5 seconds per stop.

See a doctor: Normally, the heart rate increases with exercise. Although the rate can vary, your heart should not "pause". Pseudo your doctor, who may want to monitor your heart during exercise to see what is happening.
