Hard to do: Hi. Unfortunately, unlike LDL, which is easy to treat, there isn't much you can do for HDL. Exercise and red wine correlate with higher HDL. The drugs with the most HDL-raising effects are fenofibrate and Niaspan (niacin). Good luck!

Niacin & Primrose : Niacin is a great solution for raising HDL naturally.  I typically recommend patients take time released Niacin to minimize the flush at a dose of 500mg three times per day.  Ask you doctor before going this route of course.

Another great remedy is to add evening primrose oil to your dietary supplements.

Good cholesterol: Cholesterol acts with the body's proteins to create strructures known as lipoproteins. These have various sizes and functions. Hdl is generally recognized to form beneficial lipoproteins, hence it is referred to as "good" cholesterol. That is a number that we want to be as high as possible; it is often genetically and hormonally influenced.

I would take omega 3: fatty acids found in fish like salmon to reduce triglycerides,or an omega 3 pill. Exercise doesn't do much for high triglycerides.

Many causes possible: High triglycerides can be caused by many problems including: familial genetic problems, obesity, high fat diet, alcohol intake, oral contraceptives, metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance), low thyroid, certain medications (hiv meds, steroids, cyclosporin, tamoxifen), kidney disease (nephrotic syndrome).  You need to see your doctor for a complete evaluation.

: It may lower your total cholesterol but I am not sure how much these supplement can bring down the bad cholesterol LDL. Why are you willing to take 3 capsules a day which costs more money than a single tablet of statin and its effectiveness has been proven by studies, especially you already have at least 2 risks for coronary disease: man and above 50, unless you have serious adverse effect(s)?

Talk to your Dr.:  A total cholesterol level is normal if below  200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels should be less than 100 mg/dL. Your number were normal. Your doctor should be able to tell you what your HDL (high density lipoprotein) level was.
