not to long ago i had a hard time pooping, more then a few times just mucus came out. lately it's been green and loose. what could be the cause?

REALLY STUCK: You are likely having liquid stools going around a giant solid log of poop.  Start by doing a MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) clean out on the weekend.  Put MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) into everything you drink until you poop clear.  Then, the important thing is to not let it happen again. Stool softeners are pretty useless to actually "soften" stool.  Titrate MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) every other day, or daily to avoid hard rocks. Drink more water, eat veg!

stools become hard while smoking weed and when not it tends to float and is loose. so should i continue to smoke weed to poop properly?

No: No, even though weed is a plant, that's not the kind of fiber we say is good for health. A primary care doctor can evaluate and take it from there. Hope everything comes out ok.

Worth an exam: Severe pain is worth attending to!  I would want to rule out an inflammatory or infectious process causing your symptoms.    An exam and possibly lab work are indicated.

Possible infection: You may have a parasitic infection in your intestines. The best thing to do is to get a lab test that looks at your stools.

Not unusual: The sigmoid colon acts to solidify and compact stool so what you are seeing first probably comes from that area of the colon.  What is up higher may not be so firm because it has not reached the sigmoid yet so it can be somewhat looser.  Unless this represents a recent change in bowel habits would not be too concerned but if it is a change would have it checked out by your doctor with rectal exam.

See your doctor: If you have chronically loose stools you could have a chronic bowel problem (inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease or irritable bowel syndrome) which may be treated.  You should see your doctor for further evaluation.  Generally you should avoid dairy, salads, artifical sweetners and fruits.  Starches (pasta, potatoes, rice) are helpful.  Occasionally a fiber suppliment may be helpful as well.

C. diff colitis: This colon infection comes from a spore, that can hang around in your colon. Usually its easily treated with oral antibiotic flagyl. Once on treatment the diarrhea should slowly resolve. However recurrent c. Diff does occur. If diarrhea returns or persists, then you need additional stool samples and longer time on antibiotic, up to 8 weeks. Stay in touch with your doc, report your symptoms.

Roughage: Eat foods high in fiber, more greens, oats, bran etc.
Also metamucil is a great source of roughage. It contains psyllium, which should solve the problem.

It wasn't food: That caused your symptoms. The stool behind a hard impaction is liquidy. Colonic bacteria produce methane, a foul smelling gas. Having an impaction allows those bacteria to metabolize the dwelling food and create gas. Their peoducts can change the color of stool.

Not to worry: The tip of the stool may have had more fluid extracted from it so it may be harder. It is generally not a worry signal.
