just started strenuous job. lot's of heavy lifting. next day, arms feel swollen (no pain) and hands fall asleep really easily. i have to keep my arms down to avoid hands falling asleep. hands also feel like i'm wearing thick gloves. what is this?

Edema: If you just started your job and have not done repetitive lifting before the swelling in your hands is primarily from exercising them.  Cool compress and NSAID may help. I would anticipate that as you continue to work your hands will get stronger and adapt to the regular activity.

Numbness: Possibly your are sleeping on your side, or your arm/hands over your head/shoulder.  This compresses the nerve (like sitting with crossed legs and feeling sleepy legs). Sleep on your back with arm on the side or over your chest.

Carpal tunnel.: Sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome - a compression of the median nerve in the tunnel as it enters the wrist.  Usually causes numbness / tingling in the first three digits of the hand.  Treatment is rest / splint and non steroidal anti-inflammatory meds.

Lying on arms.: Probably b/c you are lying on your arm and partially cutting off the blood flow and nerve transmission to your hands. When you shift positions, you feel the numbness and tingling.

Carpal tunnel: Hands falling asleep could be carpal tunnel syndrome which classically wakes patients up at night.  They shake their hands to get the feeling back.  Conservatively treat with wrist splints.  See a neurologist and make sure it's not a manifestation of cervical spine stenosis causing pressure on your nerves.  Surgical management for carpal tunnel is an  option once all other modalities fail.

Parathesias: At night we can have ulnar compression that results in hands getting numb. May be related to cervical spine disease ,or thoracic outlet syndrome  Would also check for carpal tunnel syndrome, especially if you work a lot with computers.  Splints at night , motrin ( if not allergic ) may help. rarely could be MS(usually not both sides). f/u/ w/ doc

Numbing of hands ins: You need to see a spine specialist to r/o any reason for spine bones to compress upon the nerves to cause those symptoms. 
Once that is ruled out; other avenues can be explored eg blood levels of vitamin b12; or any local bolt lesion or cyst to compress upon nerve or compromise blood supply.

"hands fall asleep": Pregnancy can cause retention of liquids , and this swelling can compress nerves more often than when not pregnant (18 weeks).  Sleep is deeper in pregnancy, and the normal signals to shift position are not always activated, so circulation is interrupted especially to arms/hands, which is temporary and not of concern.

Hand tingling EtOH: There are many reasons that your hands can "fall asleep" during the night and many are positional.  You typically move without awareness when this happens, or wake up and avoid it getting worse.  Alcohol could prevent you from that awareness; but it is also toxic to the nervous system, so could ultimately worsen something like entrapped nerve, carpal tunnel or other syndromes.

Get examined: Sounds like u may have early carpal tunnel syndrome(pinching of  median nerve @wrist).Gripping and re-gripping the bar w/ wt.Lifting could be irritating the nerve.Do your hands hurt @night?See your physician for exam(best to come in right after u wt.Lift)..Good luck!
