Just started strenuous job. lot's of heavy lifting. next day, arms feel swollen (no pain) and hands fall asleep really easily. i have to keep my arms down to avoid hands falling asleep. hands also feel like i'm wearing thick gloves. what is this?

Edema: If you just started your job and have not done repetitive lifting before the swelling in your hands is primarily from exercising them. Cool compress and NSAID may help. I would anticipate that as you continue to work your hands will get stronger and adapt to the regular activity.
