why does one finger on each hand get really hot while the other fingers are really cold? the finger that heats up isn't always the same one either

Too hot or too cold?: Your symptoms beg the question:  Which is abnormal, the cold or hot fingers?  My guess, it is the cold ones that are abnormal causing the the others to seem warm.

Do you smoke?  If so, your symptoms may represent Thromboangiitis Obliterans (Buerger's disease).

This could represent a condition known as Raynaud's phenomenon which can accompany connective tissue disorders or autoimmune conditions.

i have been recently dx with ms, and my hands keep going from hot to cold and my fingers keep turning blue at the tips, and i don't really know why.

?MS: You may have MS but  the fingertips turning blue sounds more like Raynaud's syndrome and is treatable. You may need to see a rheumatologist to get this diagnosed and treated.

have brownish discoloration on only third and fourth finger of both hands (seems bilateral) no vertical or long dark lines or anything. discoloration is not on the whole nail but more so at the front and inner corner. what could this be?

Loss of function: I am not sure that I understand all of your description but if you have actually lost that much function, would recommend that you get an evaluation by an orthopedic hand surgeon.

Strain: You could have pulled the muscles and tendons on that side (abductor carpi). I would rest as much as possible, take some anti-inflammatories such as advil/ibuprofen first (with food) and if does not improve in few days see a doc.

Possible infection: Swelling that persists after an operation especially if hot may be signs of an infection and need to be checked by a physician.

Poor circulation: Do you have low blood pressure?  If you move your arms in a  vertical circle ( like pretend jump roping and your arms are the rope) for 15 to 30 seconds  every 10 minutes does this prevent  the spotchiness and swelling  when standing or walking?  You may need to reassess your life style to help keep autonomic nervous system balanced.

Uncertain ? Ganglion: Uncertain since it's a cute it could be a ganglion, could be the joint, could be a tendon, could be a bursitis, we have a variety of considerations but it went away after two minutes. I would call if it persists and see your physician and maybe see a rheumatologist
