Heavier, wt bearing exercises will build larger muscles, lighter wt and more reps will create better definition of your muscles. Other ectomorphs(hard gainers) can't seem to gain muscle mass regardless of how much they work out and eat.  Also remember it's easier to gain muscle mass when you just start working out compared to after working out for years.
