Method you like: It is patient   choice more often open tension free hernia repair is done under local anesthesia ( with sedation )  using synthetic graft which has very low incidence of recurrence , few surgeons prefer laparoscopic repair where general anesthesia is required.

Short answer yes: There has been a lot of research comparing the different ways to fix hernias. There is really very little difference. The most important factor is what method your surgeon is most comfortable using. There have been reports of complications with all mesh hernia repairs but are not common. The thing is, repair without mesh is not close to as reliable as with mesh. Talk to your surgeon more.

Depends a lot: on size of hernia and strength of your native tissue.  Five weeks is usually enough time for initial healing.  Ask your surgeon for specific advice, but you can probably start slowly.

had groin hernia surgery 5 days ago. the side that was operated on still looks like it has a bump. does that mean the hernia is still there?

Postoperative Check: 33 year old gentleman s/p hernia surgery now with a "bump" in the area of surgery. Please contact your surgeon immediately. What you are noticing may be a seroma, fluid collection, or even a wound infection. It is impossible to tell without an exam. If your surgeon is on Healthtap you can show him your wound on the system without having to visit the office until it is deemed necessary.

DGL is used to: help with acid reflux and is safe.  If you take licorice that is not DGL, over time it can raise your blood pressure.  Please consult w/your doc.  Peace and good health.  Previous surgery unlikely cause.

If mesh is used: to repair the hernia then it is normal , then in couple moths the area gets normal. Go for POST OP follow up with the surgeon

At 33, close to 0...: The odd to develop PE should be close to 0. But it is still advisable to push yourself to move around and return to "normal" life as fast as possible to fulfill: Do something within personal control and stop worrying about those beyond. An uneventful inguinal herniorrhaphy should usually heal well with a fading pain in 1-3 weeks; so, it is okay as long as less painful day by day.

Probably: Get area examined. An ultrasound or ct scan can see hernia also but usually just need examination by someone experienced with hernias; typically a surgeon.

There : There are several different ways to repair an inguinal hernia.  A traditional repair involves an incision over the area of the hernia and the placement of a plastic mesh material to plug or cover the defect.  Alternatively, your surgeon may perform a laparoscopic hernia repair which involves making a few incisions near your navel and placing mesh in front of the hernia.  Generally, the recovery from a laparoscopic hernia repair is shorter and involves less pain.  One can usually return to regular activities within a few days to a week.  Traditional hernia repairs usually require a longer recovery (3-5 weeks) but can be performed under local anesthetic meaning the patient does not have to have a full general anesthetic.  This is beneficial for some patients who may not tolerate general anesthesia.  You should speak with your surgeon about all your options as every patient has unique conditions which may influence how the surgeon may recommend proceeding.
