No: It would probably heal faster with stabilization and/or immobilization. If it is a small, trivial fracture (like a small chip fracture), then it probably doesn't matter as much. You should speak to the person who made the initial diagnosis since that person knows the extent of your injury. If there is any doubt, you should be seen by a qualified hand surgeon.

Check again: Even a non-displaced FRACTURE takes 4-6 weeks to heal completely! Maybe the doctor meant you can remove it for periods of time when you are doing NOTHING with the arm/hand.. BTW always follow-up ER visits with  your GP (family physiian) is a follow up has not been arranged by the ER doctor!!!!!!! Hope this is helpful!

Yes: If your hand is fractured or even if you just think your hand might be fractured, i would suggest seeing an orthopaedic surgeon for an exam and x-rays to make sure that your hand injury is treated appropriately.

Yes: It is generally a good idea to minimize work with a hand that has been operated on. The amount of time off is highly variable and depends on the procedure being performed and the demands of the job. I would check with your local hand surgeon regarding the specifics of the surgery.

i burned my hand on the oven rack. is it a good idea to put ice over it?

Yes: Sure ice does wonderful things for the first 48 hours after a burn. First, it has numbing qualities by overloading nerve endings with cold feeling which decreases the pain fibers from saying "ouch" in your head. Second, the cold does decrease and prevent inflammation.  After 2 days though, ice wont help with swelling.  If you have no sensation at all over the burn, it may be a deep burn, see an md.

Yes: neospirin is ok.     Bacitracin is preferable

i have type i iddm, in good control but have developed pain, severe stiffness and loss of rom in both hands that is progressing quickly. it presents almost as trigger finger but involves all 10 fingers. no loss of sensation, good cap refill. ideas?

Diabetes and Hands: Diabetes is a risk factor for several hand conditions, including trigger finger and carpal tunnel syndrome. Hand stiffness can be related to both trigger finger and osteoarthritis. I have also seen hand stiffness in patients with diabetes. You should consider seeing a hand surgeon for the complete evaluation and work up.
