Not a worry: Polio is virtually nonexistent in the us due to the vaccines.  Some pts have unilateral leg atrophy, as a remainder of childhood disease, and when breathing problems did occur, an iron lung was employed.  Some pts do experience a post-polio syndrome, with weakness, fatigue and further muscular atrophy.

Paralysis: Polio is nearly extinct.  Only rare cases are now reported in remote areas of the world.  The virus attacks the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord and brainstem.  The child becomes weak or paralysed with loss of muscle.  Rare cases affect breathing muscles, and the child has to be on a ventilator.  The virus then disappears, but the nerves may be permanently damaged leaving small atrophic legs.

Poliomyelitis : Is a viral infection of humans that in about 1 in 100 infections will cause a febrile illness with asymmetrical weakness of muscles that if affecting the respiratory muscles may require respiratory support. In the heyday of the disease, in the 1940s and 50s, many children were placed in the old "iron lungs". There is no treatment but vaccination has basically eradicated it in the developed world.

Polio: Has existed all over the world for centuries. There have been major outbreaks everywhere at one time or another.  Due to vaccination efforts the virus was almost eliminated but due to turmoil in several countries, Syria,Afghanistan,Iraq, etc. vaccination efforts have been thwarted and polio continues to have a presence.
