Waking up gasping : for air is a usually a sign of sleep apnea; gastro-esophageal reflux severe enough to cause it?  Maybe, depending on your history. What does " I don't sleep often" mean? I trust your MD knows your health history &amp; has results of your cranial ultrasound, CT scan of the brain &amp; endoscopy. Tell your doctor. Seek an appt. sooner than Dec. &amp; ask if any studies are needed before your visit.

12mo son diagnosis with silent aspiration at 5mo; also has gerd. otherwise healthy & structurally ok. will he outgrow (& what age)? or at what age is intervention needed (slp)? can slp help now at 12 mo?

Yes, SLP helpful: Any time a child has swallowing problem they need to a see an slp. An slp can be helpful, even in infancy. They help to develop swallow skills and help decide when a follow up swallow study should be done. It's hard to make predictions about if or when a child will outgrow a swallowing problem but therapy is an important part of gaining swallowing skills.

The episode you: Describe would not be unusual for someone with curd and anxiety also has a state of being totally deconditioned. Please see your family doctor and get worked up for appropriate gerd treatment which may need to be aggressive in your case. Make sure also that the anxiety is aggressively treated including psychotherapy and ensure that you work with physical therapist due to your deconditioned state before you attempt exercising. No.: When you sleep flat on your back, you are more likely to passively regurgitate and have gerds. Your best position is sleeping sitting up at 90 mdegree angle. Gravity will keep acidic gastric juice causing gerd in your stomach or distal esophagus. Not your mouth or lungs.

Possibly: Many people with reflux have their worst problems at night when laying flat;  sleeping more upright with pillows or even putting the head of the bed elevated on blocks can help.  If the reflux is unresponsive to maximal medical management, surgery is an option.  I strongly advise you to have a 24 hr pH study to objectively measure what is happening when you sleep before considering surgery.

Kind of yes: If you have bad reflux, when you lay down there is no gravity keeping your gastric juices and acid in your stomach. The acid will migrate up your esophagus and can cause a feeling of vomit or choking when you wake up. You need to be evaluated as well as change certain lifestyles such as raising the head of your bed while you sleep. An upper endoscopy is essential for your exam.

Often, the anxiety came first and needs to be stopped by using medical treatment. At the same time, the doctor will check to be sure there is no urgent heart or lung disorder. GERD is common and has known effective therapy.
