Not usually: A basic stool exam is generally to assess for occult blood.  However, stool can be utilized for a number of more specialized tests, such as organism culture and screen and enzyme analyses.

Blood in stool: Blood in the stool is not normal and needs to needs to be explained. A normal colonoscopy does not rule out bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract. An upper endoscopy and /or upper GI series ( xray procedure) would be needed to look for bleeding higher than the reach of a colonoscopy.

Small incidence: About 25% of positive fecal  occult blood tests are associated with cancer.  The majority of the tests miss a cancer which may not release blood into stool or detect blood from intermal hemorrhoids or fissures in rectum.  Blood tests to define gene mutations  more accurate but don't guarantee tumor presence, only potential for developing malignancy. New tests detect shed tumor protein in stool.

FOBT--how it works: If you're using the old hemoccult slide, you'll notice its two-sided.  You place your specimen on one side, and close the lid. The doctor or lab, when developing your specimen, turns the card over, opens the back (its clean on that side), and applies the developer solution which soaks thru to your specimen. If a color change, the doctor or lab knows your specimen contains invisible blood.

Usually yes: Patient-care information gathered in the office setting can be added to a patient's electronic medical record. For example, there may be a line in the Lab Results data sheet or in the Colon Cancer Screening page for the provider to enter the results of fecal occult blood testing. The abbreviation may be FOBT or iFOBT or FIT, depending on the type of test card.

Fecal immunochemical testing (fit)/immunochemical fecal occult blood test (ifobt), stool guaiac test for fecal occult blood (gfobt), fecal porphyrin quantification (hemoquant), and fecal dna test or pregen-plus.  The stool guiac is the most proven, and can be done at home.  But it is best to see your doctor since he/she can order it and a positive test must be followed up.

No: It is important to have the hemorrhoids taken care of first, before doing occult blood test. A positive occult blood test, even a false positive one will lead to additional investigation which may not be warranted. It would not take gross bleeding from hemorrhoids to produce a positive occult blood test.

Abn bowels x 10 m: Have they checked for ova, parasites? bacteria like camphylobacter? Yeast overgrowth? celiac disease or gluten sensitivity? Sometimes one is sensitive to soy or other foods , can for that. Also check gallbladder for stones/ dyskinesia with sono and if needed HIDA scan. may also be bacterial overgrowth . Try a multispecies probiotic  like Nexabiotic on Amazon f/u w/ GI doc, nutritionist
