Recovery time: Post surgical recovery takes many weeks. Watch for signs of infection, and discuss PT with your physician. For pain control, continue ice and take Motrin as needed.

: Elevate the foot higher than your head when you are supine. Probably less in AM.  The swelling tends to drain out if related to too much salt when you sleep.  If you are a big salt eater stop.

Determine the ethiol: First the ethiology of the swelling need to stablish may not have anything to do with the stress fx.And it could be that the force needed to stop the swelling will require higher mm hg.

: Your description of your ankle injury sounds a lot like a sprain. Glad there was no fracture, but sprain is no joke either and can take 6-8 weeks to heal, longer if you ignore it. Stay off that leg as much as possible; elevate leg on a pillow.  Consider an ankle brace for extra support. Ibuprofen may help if tolerated. Visit your PCP or podiatrist if not healing.

: Yes, compression stockings can help with edema or leg swelling along with test and elevation. They have to be well fitted as otherwise they may worsen the swelling.

Possible infection: Swelling and warmth can be signs of infection.  You could try some heat and NSAIDs, but if the symptoms persist or worsen you should definitely have it evaluated by your surgeon.

Decreased edema: She has decreased swelling and the cast is now loose.  If she can move her ankle around or is having discomfort the cast will need to be replaced.
