i fell on my outstretched hand two days ago and although there is minimal swelling the pain is unbearable sprain or fracture  i know i need a x-ray but is it common to have a break but not a lot of swelling. the pain is unbearable?

: You may have a wrist fracture.  Get this X-rayed and find out if there is a bone problem or a torn tendon.  A hand specialist needs to be seen ASAP.  If the pain is unbearable, why are you delaying?  Get proactive.

i had a scaphoid fracture from a sports fall in soccer. i'm wondering if people break their hands some other way?

Accepted Answer

Yes: People can break the scaphoid without a severe injury if they have a vitamin d deficiency, calcium deficiency, long-term steroid uses, severe osteoporosis, or a malignancy that takes away the bone strength. You should talk with your doctor about getting an MRI if you are concerned about the scaphoid bone.

i hit my hand on a table 6 days ago. x-ray shows no break. it is still swollen& very painful despite using ice and a wrap. is a fracture possible?

Yes: Sometimes a very small fracture won't be evident on x-ray until 7-10 days after it happens. If your concerned get back in for recheck and another film.

i just hit my hand on something hard and immediately my thumb at the joint became slightly swollen and bruised.  it's not hurting unless i mash on it.  it is a little numb at the joint, but not bad.  is this most likely a sprain, fracture, or break?

Hard to say: It is really hard to say.  If you had significant mechanism to have caused a fracture, you might want to be seen, examined, and get an X-ray.  If it was a minimal "bump" you might give it 24-48 hours if rest, ice, elevation and if it seems to have resolved let it go but if not better be seen.

First : First of all "re-break"is misleading. It confers the image of your doctor with your arm across the table twisting your wrist.  The general term is osteotomy which means to  surgically cut the bone and realign it

many fractures heal with the joint in great position but the area near the joint with some exttra or raised tissue. This is not typically a problem

if the alignment of the fracture is off it depends upon how much and how far off it is.

No matter what be certain that when you go back , to see your doctor, liley xrays will be taken and a discussion will follow.

It can take at times a year or two for certain symptoms to go away after a wrist fracture. So do not make any assumptions of surgery being needed yet

often therapy and time makes a huge difference.

Unsure your question: A hairline (nondisplaced ) wrist fracture is a 
normal fracture( break)
it will typically heal over about four weeks
some more serious wrist fractures might
require reduction, longer healing or even 
surgery but they are still "normal " fractures
pain usually correlates with severity of fracture and swelling.

i have a fractured colles that is non-displaced. after the initial break, my wrist was swollen and appeared deformed. it has been in a splint for several weeks. i am wondering if the deformity will subside once the swelling goes down. ?

Colles deformity: First, best to ask Ortho Surg - I am Primary Care doc.  But that being said, I have had and treated multiple such fractures - fracture site often has bump forever - this is good - it is callous/ bone formation making this area stronger - might break again, but not in same fracture site, which is often stronger due to this callous.
