i have been diagnosed with asthma and told to take formoterol fumarate and mometasone furoate inhaler for lifelong. is this the right treatment?

Kind of: It can be a good treatment plan but i don't like the lifelong part. You might need more, you might need less, you might even go without medications at times, depending on symptoms.

Depends on cause.: Technically, that would depend on the cause of your cough, and as such the treatment you mention wouldn't be aggressive as much as it would be misdirected.  This would be fine for asthma or COPD, perhaps, but not for allergies or reflux, which can also cause a chronic cough.

is combivair 200 (budesonide + formoterol fumarate) only for asthma or has other uses such as chronic cough control as well?

No: If the cough is caused by a  lung condition like asthma or COPD then it can be quite effective.  Otherwise no.

Similar ingredients: The are a couple of inhalers with similar medications, used for the same conditions that symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) is used for. For example, there is advair. One's doctor can help decide whether a change would be helpful or not.

Generally, yes: The medicines in question are used by many many people, for short term and long term periods, and are considered safe. However, life is unpredictable, so patients work with their doctors to use the smallest amount of medicine as long as their asthma is controlled well. Usually, it is better to be on medication than to be sick with asthma symptoms (which do damage the lungs over time).

Yes, if no thrush: Rinsing with water after using symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) is sufficient for removing the leftover medication from the mouth after dosing,  so that one does not swallow it. If there is evidence of a fungal infection of the cheeks or tongue, then water alone is not sufficient. when using dulera (formoterol and mometasone) when you inhale in do you exhale  through the mouth or nose...dr. said mouth ..insert said nose?

Procedure: Exhale, shake the gadget. Put the tip of the gadget at the opening of an open or partially open mouth, to allow air to get in through the mouth. Inhale through the mouth, while inhaling, press the activator, medicine goes out and is carried by the air through the mouth into the lungs. Inhalation is slow and deep like a regular breath but through the mouth. Stop breathing about 2 seconds at the end.

Accepted Answer

Depends . . .: Safety is a relative issue. You didn't mention why you were advised to take this medication, presumably for asthma or COPD (most likely the former given your youth). In these two conditions, it's most important to breath which then makes side effects more tolerable. However, caution is advised in severe liver disease such that long term safety is something you need to decide w/your doc.

can dulera (formoterol and mometasone) lose it's effectiveness over time? i'm on dulera (formoterol and mometasone) 100mcg 2 puffs 2 x a day and just got a cold and need to use rescue inhaler throughout day

Accepted Answer

May need more: Talk to your doc.  You may just need more rescue to to illness. If need for inhaler that high your doc may want you on oral steroids.
