Commitment: Commitment is a possibility in all states, but the procedures vary.  Also in general, the person has to be a danger to self or others.  It's best to work directly with the person and his/her physician if you can, because this gives the best chance of success over time.  In many states there is outpatient commitment as well as inpatient, but there is a different process for that.

Getting help: As a psychiatrist i've noticed that people are often anxious to come to my office.  The family pushing them is generally to no avail.  If the patient has a good relationship with their primary care physician, that doctor is frequently helpful in expalining the basics of illness and why referral to a specialist is appropriate.

Probably not: After age 14, at least in ca, adolescents have rights to accept or reject psychiatric care, except under specific circumstances.  Realistically, it's quite tough for anyone to "force" a 16 yo to do anything--and not necessarily a good idea even if posible.  May be best to start by meeting with a therapist as  parent(s) to work on an approach that pushes her toward seeking therapy or help you cope.

Not Likely: Each state, including pa, has laws regarding involuntary treatment. An individual can only be confined if considered a danger to themselves (suicidal), danger to others (homicidal) or gravely disabled. Although anorexia is a very serious illness with a high mortality rate, the diagnosis itself does not warrant involuntary treatment. It is important to follow md recommendations. Get help.

Total control: Women in labor might not be in the best physical/mental condition to make intelligent choices.  But legally they have the final say in what could be done after their doctor explains the possible choices.  This would include the risks of making the wrong choice.

Constipation w/blood: Depending on age & risk factors, anal fissures & hemorrhoids commonly cause bleeding when straining at stool.  Stool softeners, fiber additives, avoiding long sitting on the cammode, sitz baths, & hemorrhoidal creams may help.  A bigger question is why you have hard stool.   Could this be due to narrowing of your colon from inflammation, scar tissue, external factors, slow gut?  See your doctor.

See doctor: Masturbation did not cause the current condition. You cannot see the nerves. In short, it is not a do it yourself issue, consult a urologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Pancreatitis: Can be tough to deal with.  I agree the ER is a very busy and not always pleasant place.  There are many strategies but pancreatitis can be tough to deal with.  Only use your pain medication when necessary as you build tolerance to it.  Try eating small meals that are low in fat.  Enzyme supplementation also helps.  Lastly, nerve blocks, surgery and duct decompression are possible options.

a long time ago when i was 16, i overdosed on 23 aspirin. my parents tried to force me to drink milk. i never got medical treatment for it and ended up in severe pain and loss of hearing for a week. can that cause long term damage? i'm 24 now?

: A single overdose should be entirely reversible (generally within several days or a week or 2). Overdose from long term excessive use - maybe not so much. See your ear doctor.
