This measures the amount of serotonin in your body.  Higher than normal levels may mean carcinoid syndrome.  The normal range is 101-283 ng/ml.  This has a triad of cutaneous flushing, diarrhea, and valvular heart disease, and occurs in 5% of patients with carcinoid tumors.  This is important since patients with this syndrome have a 2.5 year median survival from the first episode of flushing.

Blood tests for Serotonin are not all that reliable. So a metabolite called 5HIAA is often measured in a 24 hour Urine collection. Even this test is not all that reliable. So the diagnosis and treatment decisions are based on clinical symptoms and the experience of the treating doctor. Seek an expert in Carcinoid syndrome. A second opinion before starting any treatment is advised.

A hematology blood count measures things like amount of hemoglobin, number & size of red & white blood cells, platelets, etc.  Serotonin level would not normally be a part of this, and another blood sample would need to be drawn.  "serotonin level" may be tested via serum or 24-hour urine collection.  The latter is often used in a workup for tumors that secrete serotonin or related metabolites.

Friends.  And not smothered in butter and salt.  Lean meats no larger than a deck of cards or your palm. Fresh fruit is also good.  Minimize yellow cheeses in favor of white cheeses .  Eggs are ok but egg whites are better.  This is a lifestyle so don't go to extremes by totally eliminating foods but rather each meal should be balanced and is a new opportunity to make better choices.

No particular medication will alter the progression to having diabetes. You should arrange to have discussions with your primary care doctor or gastroenterologist about maintaining a normal weight. Keeping it under good control is the primary way of avoiding diabetes currently. Good luck.

Hives should last about 1-2 weeks regardless of the cause.  You would be wise to avoid the foods you cannot tolerate until testing is finished to see how severe your reactions are.

The main way of determining if one has glutamate sensitivity is seeing if they react badly to eating glutamates. I know of no blood test. Taking vitamin b6 (about 50 mg/day) may reduce your sensitivity. It is possible to test for plasticizers in urine, but i don't think it's been validated. Especially when it pertains to doping testing in sports to look for prior transfusions. Testing is available, but i don't think there is a clinical application yet. Off course, testing is available to evaluate products for permissible plasticizer levels.

How much gluten food does a patient need to eat before taking a celiac panel blood test?  how far in advance does she need to eat gluten food? thanks!

Accepted Answer

A celiac "panel" should look for several things and some of those will be positive in people with celiac disease without any exposure to gluten at or before the time of the test.  Certain antibodies will only be positive if you have been exposed to gluten a day or so before the study, but they do not define celiac disease.
