if you have had vertigo in the past 6 months for a few weeks, can you get it again after having a cold? i have fluid in my ear and have had vertigo.

Vertigo recurrence: Vertigo can be caused by a number of reasons related to a portion of your brain and ear called the vestibular system.  

Cold viruses can sometimes cause a condition called labyrinthitis which can in turn result in vertigo, ringing in your ears and even hearing loss.

Persistent or recurrent vertigo should be evaluated by your primary physician.

Not usually: Fluid in the ear does not generally cause vertigo.  I've seen patients complain of imbalance with fluid in the ear.  The most common causes of vertigo are meniere's disease, migraine, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (bppv), viral labyrinthitis, vestibular neuronitis.  Fluid is not seen in the middle ear with any of these, generally.  Fluid changes in the inner ear cannot be seen on exam.

Eustachian tube dysf: The most likely thing you  have is eustachian tube dysfunction, most likely  from a recent cold or allergies.   If your hearing is decreased  you may have fluid in the ear. Try to pop your ears by holding your nose and blowing hard. The ears should pop.  If you pop your ears regularly this problem may resolve on its own (30 or more times a day).  If you can not pop your ears than have a doc check.

Dizziness: Yes fluid in the ears common cause of dizziness but it will not disappear without  some treatment I would try a decongestant

That&#x27;s all ENT said?: Fluid in your middle ear has nothing to do with dizziness. The balance organs are in the inner ears which you can&#x27;t see by looking at the eardrum. The fluid issue is irrelevant; what&#x27;s pertinent is why are you dizzy? ENTs are dizziness specialists. What did ENT think is causing it?

See your PCP first.: There are other possibilities such as eye strain, tension headaches or anxiety attacks. It could be all of the above. Some people  have seizures precipitated by strobe lights. You need to get back to your pcp and get an eeg to rule out seizure then to either a neurologist or a psychiatrist if symptoms persist.

i have fluid in my ear that's causing me vertigo, how do i release or relieve this. the vertigo is making me feel ill?

Try OTC: antihistamines; Zyrtec, Benadryl or Claritin for at least one week. If not relieved I suggest trying motion sickness tablets like meclizine/Dramamine for 1 week. After that, if not relieved you may require oral steroids and a medical exam.

recently had vertigo, took anti-vert for a few days and felt better so i stopped taking it. will it get rid of fluid in my ear if i take it again?

Accepted Answer

No: The Antivert (meclizine) is a vestibular (balance system/inner ear) suppressant.  It is only for dizziness/vertigo and shouldn't affect ear fluis one way or the other.

Yes: It  can cause dizzyness and vertigo.

i have a little fluid behind right ear drum, can i get vertigo from it?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely  the cause: Fluid can come and go behind the ear drum over a period of weeks with no symptoms.The fluid originates from the walls of the middle ear and simply does not exit through the normal drainage path through the eustachian tube.Vertigo is more an issue of the inner ear nerve.
