Depends on situation: Bow legs are often seen as a transitional finding when kids first start to walk, followed by a knock kneed phase between 3 & 5 and a straightening by 6-7.This occurs as the child's hips & legs begin to shift their growth to carry a growing upper body.If concerned your pcp can get x-rays to make sure the bowing is not a bone or metabolic issue & repeat the films 6m to a year later to show progress.

Cartilage wear: Bow leggedness or the varus knee can develop in adulthood if the cartilage on the inside of the knee wears down faster than the outside of the knee.  In patients that then require total knee replacement this varus deformity is corrected so the leg is straight again.

Tibial Osteotomy: A proximal tibial osteotomy is the classic surgical way to straighten bowed legs in clinically indicated. Speak with your orthopaedic surgeon, we currently use a plastic (peek) implant that is flush with your bone (no prominent plate or screws) to secure the bony cut made to straighten the leg. You wear a brace for 6 weeks with crutches until minimal pain requiring no narcotics (ave day 10).
