FIT test: The fecal immunochemical test, while not perfect, generally does not test digested blood from the upper GI tract or from food. It is fairly specific for intact human hemoglobin, thus testing only blood originating below the stomach, typically blood coming from polyps which are more friable than regular colon lining.

Blood in stool: If your heme occult test is positive, it means you have some bleeding source in the intestinal tract that can't be seen with the naked eyes.  Even though, you are 43, you should still have a colonoscopy to assure no colon cancer.

: With a positive "FIT test", see a GI specialist for guidance and possible colonoscopy/biopsy.  Colon cancer if detected early can be treated successfully.

: Follow up with your gastroenterologist or PCP will be needed in order to decide if a colonoscopy will be needed based on results of previous ones. Otherwise impossible to discern as you have conditions that can cause bleeding and the test is trying to screen for colon cancer looking for occult blood.

i have been ordered to do an annual fit test for colorectal issues, should i be concerned about why i need to do this?

I suppose you have: A strong family history of colon cancer thus your dr is proactively screening you for blood in the stool if positive , it may suggest presence of colon polyps or cancer.Cut down on your intake of fatty foods and eat more fiber , fruits and veggies . There are some studies showing that Aspirin may prevent colon cancer. Discuss with your dr if u have any concerns.

No: No special preparation is needed for the FIT test.

my parent had a positive fit/polypectomy 10 yrs ago. he was told he was too old for a follow up colonoscopy until now, when a proper referral was made. he is now in his 80s and really does not want to go through with it. is a fit test an alternative?

: Usually colonoscopy is not routine beyond 75 years. However a person who has polypectomy should have colonoscopy 3 years after.
If that is negative then FIT can be done as a alternative  . The FIT is not a substitute in a person who had polyps and younger than age 75. The colonoscopy be done at 3 years following removal of polyp and if it is negative then one more time after two years.And then FIT

: Yes, probably, but I wouldn't trust a negative test to be conclusive if the sample wasn't properly collected and submitted. Best to resubmit the test with adequate stool

: No. Food items do not cause a false positive FIT test. Positive FIT tests indicates bleeding in the colon/rectum. It would be prudent to discuss it with your doctor. Food items can cause a false positive guaiac test.
