OK: Fish oil capsules are ok in the setting of kidney disease.  There is data in IgA nephropathy that fish lil slows the loss of kidney function.  For other diseases the data is lacking.  Mercury poisoning potentially could occur if more than recommended doses are used.  I would recommend a large commercial brand since quality control has plagued fish oil formulations for years.

Supplements: The fda is forbidden by the dhsea act to pass upon the quality of supplements.  This includes fish and other oils.  Look for a reliable brand but that is not a complete guarantee.  Until congress changes this law, we are stuck with unregulated products of uncertain concentration, unknown quality and no ability to detect impurities or toxins.

Take Two And Call Me: Not so easy, buddy! These substances do not prevent the build up of plaque. They inhibit the process that starts when a plaque gets a bit too large. Aspirin is by far the best because it is cheap cheap and does the best job without too many side effects in most people, especially when compared to the other medications prescribed. Fish oil is good for a lot of reasons, not just the heart.

Not a problem: Left anterior fasicular block is not a problem and she certainly does not need a stress echo every six months. Exercise and low carb, or more accurately, low glycemic index diet are excellent things she can do for preventing future vascular disease.

Yes, see below: Yes, there's good reason to believe fish oil is helpful in helping heal from head trauma. A good dose to try is 3000 mg of EPA/DHA per day so I advise at least 3 of the ones with 615 mg 2x/day with food. One of those could be the one with A &amp; D but you would not want more than one of those a day to avoid excess A &amp; D. See

: The effectiveness of omega 3 for patients with cardiovascular disease is still controversial and the poor quality of this supplement in OTC market. Even when you eat salmon for fish oil benefit, the original source of the salmon is also important because not all salmons in the grocery markets give you the same fish oil. Omega-3 by prescription is more valuable if patient really needs it.

Some physicians would throw a statin or something at this LDL, others would discuss all options with you &amp; look at other facts about you -- do you have other risks? Would you be open to some serious physical fitness instead? No simple answers.

Possible: Red yeast rice contains statin similar to what you may find in many cholesterol lowering drugs but the dose is uneven. Getting to close to normal weight may help. Unfortunately aside from drugs, there is no truly highly effective supplement.
