Sedation: Some colonoscopies are done using versed and demerol, (meperidine hydrochloride) others use valium, others use propofol. Yours may have done using conscious sedation with not enough Demerol (meperidine hydrochloride) to reduce the pain.

just for information, i am to have my first colonoscopy. in general terms what should i expect?

Prep is an issue.: The night prior to the study you will take a "prep" orally, which is designed to cause significant diarrhea. Most patient's find this a little unpleasant, bad taste, large volume to drink, on the toilet all night, cramps. On the day of the procedure an IV for sedation, the procedure can be painful, depends on how easy the scope advances through the colon. Someone should drive you home.

im 44 yrs old no symtoms healthy just wanted to know when to do a colonscopy test and what are first symtoms if any ?

Accepted Answer

Colonoscopy: If you have no symptoms and no family history of colon abnormalities, we recommend your first colonoscopy to be at age 50. However, if you have any symptoms related to the colon, particularly rectal bleeding, changes in your bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss, you may need to have it sooner. See your doctor if any symptoms are present. Good luck.

i'm going for a colonoscopy tomorrow at 11:30am. i was told to take two doses of plenvu: once at 7pm and the next at 9pm. it unfortunately took me 2 hours to take the first dose, so i'm behind. will this interfere with the procedure?

: It should not interfere with the procedure as the goal is to clean out the intestines. Once taken, the doses along with copious water will allow for all the stool, etc to be expelled and provide a clean view for the Dr to check the walls and lining of your colon, etc.

i had my first colonoscopy yesterday morning around 9:00 a.m. today i feel very tired. how long should this last?

No more: Than 24-48 hours to get better The medications should wear off by now and you should gain strength back as you resume your normal diet.  Also try and take in several cups of water or fluids today to rehydrate your body. If symptoms persist contact your GI doctor

please name the pros/cons of a virtual colonoscopy vs a regular one?  which one would you recommend first or only?  why?

Virtual colonoscopy: Is a real waste of resources.  Get it done right with endoscopy. The prep is unpleasant, the procedure is over before you know.  I've had 2. What is the point of virtual?  You don't like the scope?  It is less sensitive and if they find anything, you need the scope. Ka-ching, ka-ching...Twice the cost.

After age of 40 year: Standard age is 50 years but with family history we suggest that you do it near 40 years of age, roughly 10 years earlier than standard recomended.

i had a colonoscopy and a polyp was removed friday morning.  i had my first bm this morning and it was very dark. do i need to contact my gi?

Accepted Answer

No: Totally normal.  Could be dark from a little bleeding from the polyp removal site, or from the colonoscopy preparation.  If it persists for a week, give your GI a call.

i had my first routine colonoscopy at 54 years old, and i have had intense itching of the anus since the colonoscopy.  can you tell me the cause?

Accepted Answer

Inflammation: It would help to know how long this has been going on, but I can give you some generalities.  The scope itself can cause irritation or very minor injury;  the lubricant may be something your skin is sensitive to; you may have some hemorrhoids that the scope caused to "act up."  Generally, doctors schedule a follow up to discuss the results.  I recommend you bring this up at that time.
