Those Darn Fifths.: It is not unusual for the 5th metatarsal to take a little longer to totally heal. Allot of pain after six months is a reason to have it examined. Walking or not, the pain is an indication that something may be amiss.

4 1/2 months ago i had a base fifth metatarsal fracture in left foot. minimum displacement. got a cast for 6 weeks and then air cast boot till now. completely non weight bearing. but there is minimum healing. should i go for screw fixation surgery?

: Healing fractured bones becomes more difficult with age. Surgeries also become more dangerous. Choosing to not do surgery may leave you with difficulties and pain with walking which can affect your overall health. You need to carefully weigh these risks when deciding what your next step will be.

i have a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal. my podiatrist had me in a boot for 4 weeks and now ive been trying to wean from the boot. is this too early? i feel no real change from when i first got the boot and am struggling with recovery time?

: If a true stress fracture and the boot was warm regularly the fracture should have been healed. The fracture might have been misdiagnosed. Where is the fracture on the metatarsal?  Some fractures of fifth metatarsal can be very serious depending on location of the fracture. I would return and get another X-ray to rule out displacement of the fracture

Not typically : No, not typically.  If the fractures were that unstable, we would really have to stabilize them with some form of fixation.  If your fractures are not displaced, it is highly unlikely you could dipsplce them dimply by "wiggling" your toes.

Yes: Neuromas can occur anywhere, but most frequently between 3rd and 4 the toes. Your pain might be a corn or compression reaction from tight shoe. Rather than guess, get examined by a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis, then you can treated and resolve this problem

Xray: The only way to determine a fracture is by taking an xray.  Don't think that just because you might be able to walk on the foot that it isn't broken.  See the doc and get an xray.

You will need to see a specialist (podiatrist or orthopedist) who will order an x-ray (usually done in office) to determine and to assist in making the correct treatment decision.  Depending on severity of the fracture treatment may  consist of a walking boot, cast, and/or surgery if necessary.
