how do you reduce suffocating feeling while flossing your teeth?

Do  it correctly!: You should not experience suffocating feeling with flossing. Something is wrong with the technique you are using; so see a dental hygienist to, see if this is the problem. If there's different problem causing sensation, it may be something neurologic, psychological, or some type of hyperactivity of your tongue and other muscles involved with this sensation. C dentist, internist, approp specialist.

Well, : Well, the good thing is your dentist told you you don't have any cavities or gum disease, so we can rule that out.

From what you describe, you might have some very light contacts where food can get caught. The other possibility is that you are grinding your teeth during the day (and night) - jaws are tense by your own admission.

This grinding may make your mouth not feel quite right. Talk to your dentist about the possibility of an occlusal guard if it is determined that you are grinding and see what he says.

the sides of my tongue have begun feeling some minor "prickly burning" sensations. i am unsure what caused this. i constantly brush my teeth and floss so i am not sure if it's an oral hygiene issue. i do wear retainers at night. any clues to cause?

Your are right this is unusual, and the first thing we ask is what have you changed or what happened recently. Q. have you had your teeth and your retainer cleaned in the last six months.  If not do go and get checked now.  You do not want something untoward developing.

Halitosis: See your Dentist for a professional cleaning.  Review with him/her brushing&amp; flossing technique, diet, tongue cleaning, tonsils, and GI issues.  Infections can also cause halitosis.

can even a little gum bleeding during flossing indicate gum disease?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Healthy gums do not bleed anymore than rubbing your hands together should cause bleeding. Bleeding means there are small ulcers in the gum tissue that are caused by bacteria.  Consider using something like the perio protect method that uses special trays to deliver hydrogen peroxide gel into the infected area.  This kills the harmful bacteria and you can keep them from coming back with regular use.

had a very small piece of filling fall off during flossing. no pain or holes i can see/feel on tooth. don't know when i can see the dentist. ?

Probably not serious: Probably not serious but it's recommended you see your DDS when convenient-  Keep it clean!

Water rinse: Aggressively swish water around in your mouth after each snack to remove debris and dilute the levels of sugar.  Keep drinking water throughout the day.  Avoid soda, as it will only add to the sugar levels and add acid (the carbonation is acid!) to your mouth.  Many juices are similar to soda.  Avoid them.

dental: i just had my quarterly periodontal cleaning yesterday. i eat some sugar free cookies during the daytime. do not want that first build up of plaque that won't come off with flossing. how often should i floss and when mainly due to snacks?

: Floss after every meal as well as brush. Snacks can build up plaque on teeth so floss if can or rinse mouth. Carry a spare toothbrush and brush if possible.

No: Rinsing will clean the interproxial portion of your teeth, the only way to effectvely clean this area is with dental floss.
