i have a fasting glucose test soon. i get extremely nervous before tests - heart pounds and body floods with adrenaline. would this affect the result of the blood test and would taking a 5mg valium affect the result? (i am not diabetic.) thanks.

Accepted Answer

No worries: If a person's fasting blood glucose is higher than desired, a non-fasting HbA1c test can be done to reveal the average blood sugar over the past 3 months. Pre-diabetes or diabetes can be diagnosed in patients, regardless of whether they are anxious, normal, or depressed. So, no worries!

can a fasting blood glucose test alone tell you that you have diabetes?

Accepted Answer

Needs confirmation: A single fasting blood sugar over 125 needs confirmatory tests to diagnose diabetes.  this can be a second fasting blood sugar  over 125, or a Hemoglobin A1c test over 6.5%.  However any sugar over 300, or any sugar over 200 associated with vision change, excessive thirst or urination, or weight loss while eating more than usual is diagnostic for diabetes without a need for confirmatory testing.

Accepted Answer

It was not fasting: Even small amount of oj means you were not fasting. Repeat the test without drinking any caloric beverage. U can drink plain water though.

Accepted Answer

Diabetes: Yes, if you have pre-diabetes or diabetes your immune function is weakened. There must be something the doctor is concerned about beyond just a simple cold.

what to do if i had a fasting blood glucose test and have been told it was high, i now have to have a hba1c on tuesday?

Accepted Answer

HbA1c: This is a blood test that tells the doctor how well your blood sugar has been controlled over the last 3 months.  If you had a high fasting sugar and your A1c is very high then you will know that you have diabetes and it is not well-controlled.  If you have a low / normal A1c then you probably just starting to develop diabetes and can treat it with diet and exercise first.

Infection: You have an infection. It very well may be a sexually transmitted disease. Or it is a bladder or prostate infection. Please go get tested.

why does it say water is allowed during the 8-12 hour fasting for the 2 hour glucose test? will that not cause a false lower blood sugar?

Accepted Answer

Sugar stays same: Drining  water does not affect level of blood sugar because it is filtered out by kidneys and does not affect glucose that is consumed as part of the glucose tolerance test.

Accepted Answer

Snacks raise glucose: Chips and cola will predictably raise glucose levels.

hypoglycemia. 5 hour fasting glucose test caused episode, low blood sugar and insulin at time of episode. insulinoma ruled out. what else could it be?

Accepted Answer

Other causes: Your evaluation is a look at the total system.  Why is there such a low reserve of glucose? Your physician  will look at other causes besides an insulinoma.

hi, last week i had a blood test & my tsh was 0.75.yesterday,i had a glucose test & they drew blood again for thyroid (not sure why).this time i was fasting & my tsh came back 2.55.could there be such a big difference between fasting & not fasting?

Accepted Answer

Doubtful: Although no special preparations are necessary for the tsh test, it can vary somewhat later in the day so morning is preferable.  If you had other thyroid blood tests were they all also normal? We usually do not ask our patients to fast for a tsh test.
