: No, an isolated neurology evaluation cannot rule out ALS, it takes tests and symptom dynamics in time, one of the most difficult diagnosis to make in medicine, incredibly cruel spectrum of conditions.

Neurologist: Atrophy in an extremity definitely needs to be investigated. The best person to see is a neurologist. I wouldn't think that ALS is the top diagnosis. Getting some answers will certainly help. Good luck.

Asymmetric weakness: Asymmetric weakness occurs in 80% of cases. It may start in upper or lower extremities or in brain stem. Weakness of the thumb and index finger or weakness of shoulder muscles can occur. Brain stem illness can manifest as difficulty with speech or swallowing. See your physician for an evaluation.

CURE FOR ALS: No. There is no cure as yet for ALS "amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, " also known as lou gehrig's disease.

Unfortunately, no: While there are no cures for als, there is one medication (rilutek) that has been shown to slow the course of the disease. There are also many treatments that can help to manage the symptoms and complications of als.  I highly recommend enrolling in a multidisciplinary ALS clinic to make sure you are receiving optimum care.
