i have a swelling in back of tongue, one side. is it the lingual tonsil? can you see the tonsils without special equipment?  why would one side swell

May be infected: Yes you can see the tonsils without special equipment if you are able to control your tongue and get it out of the way. The tonsils swell in response to infections. If one side is swollen there may be an infection on that side of the face, a tooth or gum infection, or the tonsil itself could be infected. It may also be that the swelling is not a tonsil but a gland. Have a professional check it out.

diagnosed by my ent and a ct with lingual tonsil hypertrophy. choice is to have biopsy or lingual tonsils removed. not sure what to do.

Remove them if they bother you: A biopsy may not show and underlining cancer. Most likely the tonsils are enlarged but the nine without cancer or lymphoma. The only way to know is to remove both tonsils completely especially if they are bother to you or cause infection. If they do not bother you it is reasonable to watch them to leave them alone if you do not want to undergo a fairly significant troubles of this kind of surgery in an adult.

tonsils and adenoids removed 10 years ago. now, my right lingual tonsil only is inflamed about the size of a quarter from what little i can see. it hurts. and its hard to swallow. ent wait time is over a month. what can i do in the meantime?

Your doc : Seeing your doc for an exam and possible cultures as felt needed would be your best next step. Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen are commonly used for the inflammation in the limits of your allergies and tolerability.

At your age?: Probably an inflamed node due to a throat infection. If it does not go away within a few days, make sure you see a doc.  And of course, if you use tobacco, quit, and if you don't, never try it.

Yes: That can happen. But, if the pain is severe, you have fever and you cannot open your jaw very far then you need to be reevaluated.
