About 6 weeks: Not all meniscal surgeries are the same. So don't compare yourself with friends or online chat sites. It depends on other factors like how much arthritis they find. 

Typically it is a couple days on crutches, then regain motion , then strength, which in a routine meniscal case takes about 6 weeks. 

Make sure to get the swelling down and get your quad function back soon.

Recent study: There was a recent study done in europe comparing surgery for meniscal tears and a sham operation where no meniscus was trimmed.  This was a very well controlled study and there was no difference in outcome.  There is some feeling that some of these surgeries for meniscal tears are not necessary.

I can't determine from your question if a meniscus tear has been diagnosed.  If it has, and your son has had 2 years of knee pain, surgery may be a reasonable option.

See Specialist: If you are still having pain with knee after an injury 3 years ago I would definitely make an appointment with an orthopedic specialist for further evaluation and workup. Your recurrent pain could be a mechanical issue that requires surgery. The longer you wait the worse your knee could get.

Many ways: Twisting when knee flexed @ about 30 degrees, worse if u r struck from the side in this position. Twisting in a deep knee squat, again worse if struck while in this position. Also twisting while walking on uneven ground . There r more ways but these r common mechanism of injury.

Mensicus tear: Meniscus tears are usually caused by twisting injuries to the knee.   As we get older, then amount of energy needed to tear a meniscus decreases as the properties of the meniscus change.  Complex tears involve injuries in multiple planes of the meniscus rather than one single tear.  Older individuals will often have these types of tears and degeneration in the knee likely plays a role.
