Complex tears involve injuries in multiple planes of the meniscus rather than one single tear. Older individuals will often have these types of tears and degeneration in the knee likely plays a role.

Injury.: Usually a twisting/pivoting injury to the knee can cause that. Sometimes it could be a degenerative tear, without an injury.
