what type of insole do you recommend for functional hallux limitus? there is so much contradictory information on the web. morton extension vs reverse morton extension vs first ray cutout?

: The old method was to prescribe an orthotic with a first ray extension. I had made one of these orthotics knowing it would not work for a professional wide receiver. After I had made orthotic with a first ray cutout or a plantarflexion of the orthotic with support at the first cuneiform allowing, with help of body weight, allows the first met to plantarflexion and thus hallux functions normal

i have hallux limitus. one doc recommends midfoot fusion to lower the first metatarsal more than a modified youngswick can. is this a good idea?

Accepted Answer

One would need to : Evaluate your x-rays and foot to give you an informed opinoin. 
Usually, for hallux limitis "head work" like a youngswick should work out fine.  
If in doubt, seek another opinion.

can anyone please map the pain level and mobility  associated with toe implant on one side only due to hallux limitus from operation to full recovery?

Yes: Assess the motion u have  before implant surgery... U may have a little more after surgery or have some loss... An implant is basically a joint spacer... The surgeon may decompress the joint by removing additional bone from the base of the 1st toe to help increase motion but this can cause instability of the joint...I perform implant surgery but am very selective on who receives one...

dorsiflexion osteotomy caused hallux limitus. inversion compensation causing ankle sprains and knee pain. surgeon only give shot. can this be fixed?

IT CAN BE FIXED: To be clear, you had a dorsiflexory osteotomy of the 1st metatarsal, and it was raised too much? If so, the surgery is essentially reversed to drop the metatarsal down. That should be done, to avoid arthritis at the bunion joint. You're young, so this should be done. Why was it done initially? Good luck.

Just work on motion: The main thing to work on after bunion surgery (once your surgeon says it's ok) is to work on stretching the toe up and down to help regain motion.  It's not unusual for the joint to be stiff after surgery.  No other exercises are necessary except just working on getting up and about.

Range of motion: Try and bend your toe up and down. Surgery usually will initially decrease some range of motion, so you want to make sure to prevent or break up any post op adhesions.

Yes: Hallux rigidus or early arthritis of the first metatarsal/phalangeal joint ( of the big toe)is common in athletes . Running and jumping sports can exacerbate the pain. Dorsiflexion( moving the big toe back) is usually limited compared to normal side.Nsaids, turf toe 'liners' are the basic non- operative tx.Cheilectomy( surg.Removal of dorsal 'spurs')can be done...Ok to ride ex. Bike. Gl!

feel a clunking sensation every time i bend my right big toe. frequently pops loudly as well. this started after toe was kicked hard in soccer 20 years ago. never went to doc. now it occasionally aches after exercise. should i get it checked out?
