Accepted Answer

Unlikely: Medical use of radiation is fairly safe. So we do not expect anone to die from it unless excessive radiotherapy doses are given with a faulty machine. But that should not happen under normal circumstances.

Maybe: Radiation therapy has some side effect and may cause bone to weaken and can cause the bone to fracture

Accepted Answer

Yes: If the hips get an amount of radiation above what this area can handle this complication can happen.  This is why there is treatment planning and doctors limit radiation doses to the area of concern. However if treated no more than the maximum tolerance their is still 5 percent chance of complications at that maximum level.

Informational?: Diagnostic imaging requiring xrays should always be performed to answer a clinically important question. The radiation dose is small but no patients should expose themselves needlessly.

More info needed: Bone pain in a cancer patient requires a careful search for metastatic desease.
This may be a simple back strain, but it could be as serious as loss of circulation to the hip socket resulting in avn, see your physician , many questions are due to be answered.

my insurance give huge benefit for annual checkup. considering dexa bone scan l-s spine + hips. i am 38. too early? how much radiation?

Somewhat early: It's somewhat early but not going to hurt anything to have it done.  The radiation is low dose, less than a chest x-ray.

i am going to have radiation on my very painful shoulders soon. do they just keep on using radiation for pain whenever/wherever you have it? i ask because i am now getting left hip pain. i looked at my bone scan and it says i have mets there also?

: The radiation will alleviate your pain and can be given for multiple mets, and lower dose is sometimes used in that case. The radiation oncologist can advise you best. Also there a few types of radiation therapy for metastastic deposits.

my son walks in an odd way,the dr requested hip x-ray .is this normal level of radiation exposure to a ten year old or is it too much ? how much is the radiation dose for 2 front and back hip x-ray?what is the limit of radiation allowed for a child ?

Diagnostic Radiation: Diagnostic radiation is usually a very low dose and is needed for images so your son's physician can determine what ails him. It is quite understandable that you are concerned, but without radiographs a diagnosis may not be possible. Risks are low but they outweigh foregoing treatment.

Considerable: That's going to be considerable rad. Exposure, and a radiologist would be able to give you an exact dose.
After taking a detailed hx, one can certainly point towards a specific site and investigate that part. If multiple bones are thought to be affected, then i get a bonescan, and take it from there. Other tests are done as necessary.
See your orthopod or a pain specialist.

had colonoscopy 3 days ago. had lower back pain prior. now have mild soreness in my left hip /side area. think its related to lower back issues. really dont want radiation from cat. could this be a puncture this high up near the hip?

: I agree that your hip,side discomfort is more likely to be of musculoskeletal nature. If the colon was perforated I would expect pinpoint pain and expanding tenderness in the lower left abdomen with subsequent fever &amp; chills and bloating. Rectal bleeding also may occur. If you still have concerns notify your MD or the gastroenterologist of your current discomfort.
