everything gives me heartburn!!! eating food, being hungry, lying down, randomly throughout the day... i also recently started burping tons. what can be the cause, n what shud i do?

Gi distress: Get tested for H pylori - a bacteria that is associated with gastritis and needs antibiotics to resolve. Consider food intolerances like dairy, gluten, soy ,  to check for intolerances you avoid foods with the inciting agent for a week ( i.e.  , no dairy  or no gluten wheat products, challah for a week ) and see if it improves. Do it sequentially , one week  no dairy, one week no soy. F/u/ w/ GI

Visit: If everything you eat causes this heartburn and nausea, you certainly may try an over-the-counter heartburn medication, ...But you should definitely see your personal physician.  This could be caused by several causes including some that could require a possible surgical fix (gallbladder).  Talk with your physician.

i have small hiatal hernia. no gerd symptoms or heartburn. what are the chances it will get bigger and give me symptoms ? ty

Hiatal Hernia: Hiatal hernia will slowly stretch and may give you symptoms. It may run in families. If your parents have GERD, then you may develop GERD. No need to do anything until you have symptoms.  Hiatal hernias are easily fixed.

May not be a problem: Many people have hiatal hernias without ever having problems.  Anything that increases your intraabdominal pressure a lot, such as doing strenuous activity or coughing a lot, or obesity, can cause the hernia to get bigger.  Decreasing those activities will reduce your risk of symptoms.  Once you have the hernia, you can't prevent it.  It won't resolve on its own.

can toothpaste containing peppermint oil give you gerd?

Accepted Answer

Perhaps: Peppermint oil is a smooth muscle relaxant and can lead to relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter.  I suspect with typical tooth brushing, little to no toothpaste is swallowed so it seems unlikely.

Leave it alone: Unless you develop symptoms related to reflux such as repeated and persistent heartburn or frequent and prolonged upper abdominal or chest pain Then you're probably OK.  However beware that people with hiatal hernia that develop serious chest pain should not assume that the hernia is the cause. They should seek attention right away to rule our heart problems. And - try not to overeat.

i have costochondritis, the dr. is giving me colchicine o.6 mg  for the pain. i also have gerd, will that medicine hurt my stomach?

Gout?: Colchicine is used to treat gout. I have no knowledge of any benefit for its use in the treatment of costochondritis. Costochondritis is usually treated with anti-inflammatories, oral steroids, therapy or steroid injections. Usually resolves in 4 months but can become chronic. Colchicine does not have a high incidence of gastric pain or gastritis.

Yes It can develop.: Heavy lifting doesn't always have too much to do with hiatal hernia as opposed to a groin hernia. A small hiatal hernia can certainly get bigger. The GERD or the reflux can be prevented or minimized by paying attention to your lifestyle in avoiding the late or the large meals  and also in using an extra pillow when needed. Watch your weight.

i have gerd last month and my doc give me omeprazole 20mg. after taking it for 14 days i felt good but after a week my gerd came back.wat wil i do?

Longer course: Your doctor may need to prescribe to you a longer course of Omeprazole i.e. 1-2 months. It is safe to do so. Otc drugs are always mandated to have a limited time of use until you get in to see your doc.

acid is bothering daily.take proton pump inhibitors but still gives lot of discomfort. which med should be taken and the best dose.dr says its gerd.

DGL is used to: help with acid reflux and is safe.  If you take licorice that is not DGL, over time it can raise your blood pressure.  Please consult w/your doc.  Peace and good health.
