Pros and cons: Atripla is a bit stronger but has more side effects. We use Complera (emtricitabine and rilpivirine and tenofovir) in people whose viral loads are below 100, 000 and whose CD4 counts are above 200.  Take Complera (emtricitabine and rilpivirine and tenofovir) with a meal, and don't take it with medications that reduce stomach acid.  If you're viral load is higher than that, you could take atripla, though i often prefer stribild, another single-tablet regimen that's better tolerated.

Info from study: In the pivotal study, truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir) led to an additional 44% HIV protection. No one can answer what your chances of getting HIV with truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir) since that would also be affected by the type of sexual activity/partners as well. Keep in mind people in this study also received counseling and actually had lower risk behaviors in addition to taking the truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir).

Truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir): Truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir) has proven useful as a preventative medication for HIV. It is generally well tolerated. I have never heard of stool smelling like metal as a side effect of this medication. It is recommended that you have periodic tests of your liver and kidneys while on Truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir). Although it is probably nothing to worry about, you should tell your doctor and have those tests performed. Good luck.

Damage is unlikely: It is most effective when started within 72 hours. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are the most likely short-term side effects. Long-term side effects are not expected. Tenofovir may strain the kidneys or liver - usually in those with kidney disease or hepatitis already - but permanent damage is rare. The risks of long-term organ damage are much more likely from the HIV virus than from this drug
